What is the difference between hot wax and cold wax?
How it is applied. Hot wax is warmed until it flows, spread on and removed once it has set or with a strip. Cold wax is ready to use at room temperature, or needs only brief warming, and is worked on with strips. Cold is simpler and has no burn risk from heating; hot wax is what many people find grips shorter hair. The pack states which one you have and how to use it.
How hot is too hot?
Anything you have not tested. The pack's instruction is to test a small amount on the inside of the wrist before it goes anywhere else, and that is the step people skip and regret. Wax that is comfortable on the wrist is comfortable on the leg; wax that is not has just told you so in the safest possible place. If a burn happens, cool it under running water and see a pharmacist or doctor.
Where should wax not be used?
The pack lists this and the list should be read: broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, moles and varicose veins are commonly named, and areas such as the face, the eye area and intimate areas are only for products specifically sold for them. If you are on skin medication of any kind, ask a pharmacist before waxing.
How long does the hair need to be?
Long enough for the wax to grip, which is usually a few millimetres - the pack gives a figure. Too short and it does not lift; very long and it hurts more than it needs to and is worth trimming first.
What about afterwards?
Skin is usually pink for a while. Leave it alone: no hot showers, no swimming pools or spas, no sun and no perfumed products on the area for the rest of the day. Anything that stays red, swollen or painful is worth showing a pharmacist.
