Will it keep its shape if I do not light it?
Yes, provided it is kept cool. Many seasonal candles are bought as decorations and never lit, and the shape holds indefinitely. Once it is lit the shape changes from that burn onwards.
Does a New Zealand summer Christmas cause problems?
It can. December here is warm, and wax softens well below its melting point. A candle left on a sunny windowsill, on a table in direct sun, or in a parked car on the way to a family lunch can sag out of shape without ever being lit. Keep it in the shade and out of the car.
What surface should it go on?
A plate, tray or holder — never straight onto a table, a mantelpiece or a wrapped present. A moulded candle has no container, so melted wax runs where gravity takes it.
Can I put it near the tree?
Not lit. A tree, tinsel, wrapping paper and a card display are all easy to catch, and a decorated room in December is the worst place in the house for an open flame. Unlit, it is fine anywhere cool.
How short should the wick be?
About five millimetres, before every light. A long wick gives a bigger flame, more soot and faster, more uneven melting.
Is it safe to leave burning?
No. Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from children, pets, curtains and anything else that can catch, burn it on a stable heat-resistant surface, and put it out before you leave the room or go to sleep. The container gets genuinely hot — move it only once the wax has set. In a decorated room, be especially careful what is near it.
