Frequently Asked Questions
What is sev?
A fried snack made by pressing a seasoned gram flour batter through small holes directly into hot oil, which sets it into brittle strands. It is sold in a range of thicknesses and arrives ready to eat.
What does 'nylon sev' mean? Is there nylon in it?
No, there is nothing of the sort in it. 'Nylon' is the trade name for the thinnest gauge of sev, borrowed because the strands are as fine as thread. It describes thickness and nothing else. The ingredient list on the pack sets out what is actually in it.
Why does the gauge matter?
It changes what the sev is for. Very fine sev collapses in the mouth and is used scattered over other food, where it adds texture without dominating. Thicker grades stay crunchy and work as a snack in their own right. Buying the wrong gauge is the usual disappointment with sev.
Is it made from chickpea flour?
Gram flour -- besan, milled from split chickpeas -- is the usual base, sometimes with other flours blended in. The ingredient list on the pack is the authority for a particular brand.
What is it fried in?
Whichever oil the manufacturer uses, which is named in the ingredient list on the pack. It differs between makers and can differ between production runs, so the pack in your hand is the only reliable answer -- worth checking if you avoid a particular oil.
How hot is it?
That varies by brand and by batch, and it is not something this page can pin down for a particular pack. Where a maker grades their own range the pack says so. If heat matters to you, the label is the thing to read, and a small pack is a cheaper way to find out than a large one.
How do I stop it going soft?
Air is the problem, not time. Anything crisp starts softening as soon as the pack is open, so the pack wants resealing properly or the contents moving into an airtight container. Keep it dry and out of the sun, and keep it out of the fridge -- the condensation in there will soften it faster than leaving it on the bench.
Does this page make any health or nutrition claim about this product?
No. This page describes what the product is, what it is made from in general terms, and how it is packed and kept. It carries no statement about what the product does for you, and nothing on it should be read as dietary or nutritional advice. The ingredient statement and any nutrition information panel printed on the pack are the only descriptions of what is in it, and the manufacturer is the source for both.
Is the pack the authority on what is inside?
Yes. Ingredients, allergen declarations, any nutrition information panel, the manufacturer's own storage instruction and the best-before date are all printed on the pack by the maker. Where this page and a pack differ, the pack is right.
Is this an imported product?
Yes. Products in this range are imported, so pack design, size and label wording can change between shipments. What arrives is what the current pack says, which is another reason to read the label rather than rely on a description.
Can I order this with items from other stores?
Yes. DoorToShop lets you build one order across more than one local store, so this can go in the same basket as whatever else you are getting that day.
How much is delivery, and is there a minimum order?
Delivery is calculated at checkout, where the exact amount is confirmed. Free delivery applies above the threshold shown there, in the Auckland region only. There is no minimum order value, and you can combine items from other local stores in the same cart.
