Do I really need to do the patch test?
Yes, and it is the pack's own instruction, not ours. Hair colour packs carry a warning to test a small amount on the skin 48 hours before every application, including applications of a product you have used before. Sensitisation can develop at any point, so a product that was fine last time is not a guarantee. If there is any reaction at the test site, do not use it and talk to a pharmacist or your doctor. Never use hair colour on eyebrows or eyelashes.
How do I stop it staining my skin?
A thin line of petroleum jelly or a heavy cream along the hairline, around the ears and on the back of the neck before you start. Wear the gloves that come with the pack, put an old towel around your shoulders, and wipe any spots off as they happen rather than at the end.
How long do I leave it on?
For exactly as long as the instructions inside the pack say, timed rather than guessed. Leaving colour on longer does not make it work better and is not what the product was tested for.
Why did it come out darker or redder than the picture?
Because the result depends on what colour your hair already is, how much grey is in it and how porous it is - the shade on the box is a guide, not an outcome. Colour on previously coloured hair builds up unevenly, and the ends usually take more than the roots.
Where should I do it?
Somewhere ventilated, with a surface you do not mind splashing, and not over a bathroom sink you are attached to. Keep it well away from children and pets while you work.
