Getting a Full Burn

A candle that tunnels has been badly treated in its first hour rather than badly made:

1

Let the first burn reach the edges.

Two to three hours, or until the melted wax pool covers the whole surface. Wax remembers its first pool — stop short and it will tunnel straight down the middle every time after that.

2

Trim the wick to about five millimetres before each light.

Scissors are fine. A long wick gives a large flickering flame, soot on the glass and a much faster burn.

3

Keep it out of draughts.

An open window, a hallway, a fan or a heat pump will make the flame dance, which burns the wax unevenly and marks the container.

4

Do not burn it more than about four hours at a stretch.

The container gets hot, the wick starts to mushroom, and the scent throw drops off anyway once a room has adjusted to it.

5

Stop when a centimetre of wax is left.

Burning it to the bottom overheats the base of the container. That last centimetre is the safety margin, not a bonus.

6

Let it set flat before you move it.

A candle carried while the wax is liquid sets crooked and never burns evenly again.

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it well away from children, pets, curtains and anything else that can catch. Burn it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, never on or near anything that could tip, and put it out before you leave the room or go to sleep. The container gets genuinely hot — move it only once the wax has set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has my candle tunnelled down the middle?

The first burn was too short. Wax has a memory: if the first melt pool does not reach the edges of the container, the candle will keep burning down the same narrow channel and leave a ring of wax up the sides. Let the first burn run two to three hours, or until the pool covers the whole surface.

How long should I trim the wick?

About five millimetres, before every light. Scissors do the job. A long wick produces a big flickering flame, soot on the glass and a noticeably faster burn.

How long can I burn it for?

About four hours at a stretch. Beyond that the container gets hot, the wick mushrooms and the scent throw drops off anyway once a room has adjusted to it. Stop when roughly a centimetre of wax is left — burning to the bottom overheats the base of the container.

Why is the glass going black?

Soot, usually from an untrimmed wick or a draught. Trim to five millimetres, move the candle away from open windows, fans and heat pumps, and wipe the inside of the glass with a dry cloth once it is cool.

How strong will the scent be?

That depends on the room and on you. A candle that fills a small bedroom may be barely noticeable in an open-plan living area, and people differ enormously in how they perceive fragrance. The scent description on the listing is the maker's.

Is it safe to leave burning?

No. Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch, burn it on a stable heat-resistant surface, and put it out before leaving the room or going to sleep.

How much is delivery, and is there a minimum order?

The base delivery fee is $5 NZD, with free delivery on orders above $69 in the Auckland region — the exact amount is confirmed at checkout. There is no minimum order value, and you can combine items from other local stores in the same cart.
