The Main Types
Mandirs and pooja temples
Free-standing or wall-mounted cabinets, in wood, teak or a silver-antique finish, sized from small shelf units up to floor-standing pieces with doors. Size and weight vary enormously across the range, so the listing dimensions matter more here than anywhere else in the category.
Idols, statues and sculptures
Ganesh, Radha Krishna, Sai Baba, Buddha and Laddu Gopal figures in brass, brass finish, mix metal, marble, clay and resin. Heights are usually given in inches. Material and finish are not the same thing — see the note on brass below.
Laddu Gopal dresses and accessories
Poshak dresses, swings, shringar sets and small accessories, sold by numbered size — size 0, 1, 2 and so on. The size refers to the idol, not the garment, so match it to the idol you already have.

Looking After Brass
Brass is most of the metalware in this category, and it needs almost nothing beyond drying properly. The one thing worth knowing before you start is whether a piece is solid brass or brass-plated, because that decides what you can safely do to it.
Find out whether it is solid brass or brass-plated first.
Polishing removes plating permanently, so this decides everything that follows. If the listing says "brass finish", "brass-plated" or "mix metal", treat it as plated and clean it gently rather than polishing it. Ask the store if the listing does not say.
Dust it dry before anything wet touches it.
A soft dry cloth first. Rubbing grit around with a damp cloth is what puts fine scratches into a polished surface.
Wash with warm water and a little mild dish soap.
A soft cloth, no abrasive scourers, no steel wool. Rinse it properly — soap residue left in the crevices of a cast piece dries pale and shows.
Treat tarnish only if you want the shine back.
Tarnish is brass reacting with air. It is not damage, and many people prefer the darker patina that comes with age. If you do want it bright, the traditional method is a paste of lemon juice or tamarind with a little salt, worked gently and rinsed off straight away. Test on a hidden part first, and use a proper brass polish rather than a household abrasive.
Dry it completely, immediately.
Water left sitting in a base, a groove or under a lamp is what causes the marks people mistake for damage. Dry it fully, and keep pieces somewhere dry rather than in a steamy room.

What is the difference between brass and "brass finish"?
