Do I have to burn it?
No, and many people do not. A moulded candle is bought for the shape as much as the flame, and it will keep its form indefinitely if it is never lit. If you do light it the shape changes from the first burn onwards, which is worth deciding before you strike the match.
What surface should it go on?
A plate, tray or holder — not straight onto furniture. A moulded candle has no container, so the wax runs where gravity takes it. Anything you would not want wax on should not be underneath it.
Why is it losing its shape on the shelf?
Heat, usually. Direct sun through a window, a spot above a heat pump or a car on a summer day will soften a moulded candle and let it sag. Keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
How short should the wick be?
About five millimetres, before every light. A long wick gives a bigger flame, more soot and faster, more uneven melting on an unconstrained candle.
Is it scented?
Check the listing. Some moulded candles are fragranced and some are not, and where the listing does not say, the store is the place to ask.
Is it safe to leave burning?
No. Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from children, pets, curtains and anything else that can catch, burn it on a stable heat-resistant surface, and put it out before you leave the room or go to sleep. The container gets genuinely hot — move it only once the wax has set. With a moulded candle, also watch where the wax is going.
