How long does a henna design last?
Usually a week to two on the hands, less elsewhere, and it fades as the skin it has stained sheds. Palms and fingertips hold it longest because the skin there is thickest; forearms and feet fade faster.
Why is my design orange rather than dark?
Because it is new. Henna stains orange at first and deepens over 24 to 48 hours. Judging the colour an hour after the paste comes off is judging it before it has finished.
How long do I leave the paste on?
As long as the pack tells you - commonly several hours, and overnight for a deeper result on the hands. It is scraped or rubbed off dry rather than washed off, and water is kept off the area for several hours afterwards.
What is 'black henna' and why the warning?
So-called black henna is not henna. It is henna mixed with paraphenylenediamine, a hair-dye chemical, to force a fast black stain, and it has caused severe skin reactions and lasting scarring - which is why health authorities in several countries warn against it. Real henna stains orange-to-brown and takes time. Anything painted on the skin that goes black in under an hour should be refused.
Can I use it on hair?
Henna is used on hair as well as skin, but the two uses are different preparations and different products. What a particular pack is intended for is stated on the pack - go by that.
