Frequently Asked Questions
Are these made from ordinary bananas?
No. They are made from plantain or a firm cooking banana, picked while still unripe and starchy. A ripe dessert banana is far too soft and too sweet to fry into a chip.
What does 'long' mean on the pack?
The cut. The fruit is sliced lengthways into strips instead of across into round coins. Long strips are thicker through the middle and sturdier, so they have more bite and break up less in the bag.
How is the masala version different from plain?
The spice blend is dusted on after frying rather than being in the fruit, so it sits on the surface. That makes the seasoning the first thing you notice, and it also means a certain amount of it ends up loose in the bottom of the pack.
What is it fried in?
Whichever oil the manufacturer uses, which is named in the ingredient list on the pack. It differs between makers and can differ between production runs, so the pack in your hand is the only reliable answer -- worth checking if you avoid a particular oil.
Some pieces arrived broken. Is that normal?
To a degree, yes. These are thin and brittle by nature and they travel a long way by sea and then by courier, so a proportion of breakage in the bottom of the pack is usual rather than a fault. A pack that is largely crumbs, crushed flat, or has a split seal is a different matter and the store will sort it out.
How do I stop it going soft?
Air is the problem, not time. Anything crisp starts softening as soon as the pack is open, so the pack wants resealing properly or the contents moving into an airtight container. Keep it dry and out of the sun, and keep it out of the fridge -- the condensation in there will soften it faster than leaving it on the bench.
Does this page make any health or nutrition claim about this product?
No. This page describes what the product is, what it is made from in general terms, and how it is packed and kept. It carries no statement about what the product does for you, and nothing on it should be read as dietary or nutritional advice. The ingredient statement and any nutrition information panel printed on the pack are the only descriptions of what is in it, and the manufacturer is the source for both.
Is the pack the authority on what is inside?
Yes. Ingredients, allergen declarations, any nutrition information panel, the manufacturer's own storage instruction and the best-before date are all printed on the pack by the maker. Where this page and a pack differ, the pack is right.
Is this an imported product?
Yes. Products in this range are imported, so pack design, size and label wording can change between shipments. What arrives is what the current pack says, which is another reason to read the label rather than rely on a description.
Can I order this with items from other stores?
Yes. DoorToShop lets you build one order across more than one local store, so this can go in the same basket as whatever else you are getting that day.
How much is delivery, and is there a minimum order?
Delivery is calculated at checkout, where the exact amount is confirmed. Free delivery applies above the threshold shown there, in the Auckland region only. There is no minimum order value, and you can combine items from other local stores in the same cart.
