Why not just use scissors?
Scissors work on a new candle and stop working once the wax has burned down, because the blades cannot reach the bottom of a jar at the angle you need. A wick trimmer is cranked so the blades sit flat at the base of a deep container, and the plate catches the trimming instead of dropping it into the wax.
How short should a wick be?
About five millimetres, before every light. A long wick gives a large flickering flame, soot on the glass and a faster burn.
Why does a trimming in the wax matter?
A piece of burnt wick left floating in the melt pool is extra fuel sitting where it should not be. It can relight, and it darkens the wax. Catching the trimming is half of what the tool is for.
When should I trim?
Before lighting, on a cold candle. Trimming a warm candle pushes soot into soft wax and the trimming sinks rather than sitting on the surface where you can lift it out.
Does it work on every candle?
It is made for container candles, which is where scissors fail. On a moulded candle with the wick out in the open, scissors are usually easier.
Does trimming actually change anything?
It changes flame size, soot and how evenly the wax burns down. It is the single thing that makes the most difference to how a container candle behaves, and it takes about two seconds.
