Houseplant Potting Mix 6L — sold by Urban Lush NZ on DoorToShop

Houseplant Potting Mix 6L

$14.99

Houseplant Potting Mix 6Litres How To Use Houseplants require re-potting every 1-2 years depending on the variety. Plants will eventually become root bound and roots may protrude through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. First water the plant well and allow to drain. Choose a pot larger than the old one both in diameter and in depth, ensuring it has adequate drainage holes. Place a layer of potting mix in the base of the new pot and gently remove the plant from its old pot holding it carefully close to the base. Place the plant on top of the layer of potting mix in the new pot, ensuring the root ball is slightly below the rim of the new pot. Fill in with potting mix around the root ball, gently tapping the pot to ensure all gaps are filled. Water well and leave to drain.

ZZ Plant - Zamioculcas Zamiifolia 23CM

$94.99

Zamioculas Green ZZ Plant 23cm A plant of distinguished features, the Zanzibar Gem (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) stands out from its counterparts with its unique spiral structure and high gloss, deep green foliage. Awarded House Plant of the Year, the Zanzibar Gem is resilient against drought, neglect, dry air, low light, and bugs! Impressively, the Zanzibar Gem also acts as a bio-filtration system that works to purify the air. What They Stock

Indoor plants

The bulk of the store: tropicals and aroids such as monstera, alocasia, anthurium, calathea, ficus and dracaena, alongside succulents and specialty varieties. Listed by species and by pot size, which is the number that tells you how big the plant actually is.

Planters and statuary

Ceramic and fibreclay pots, plus figurative planters and garden pieces listed by height in centimetres rather than by pot diameter. The largest are substantial objects — check the height and the weight against where it is going.

Decorative stones and shells

Polished stones, pebbles and shells sold by weight, for topping pots and for landscaping. A 12kg bag covers less ground than people expect, so work out the area first.

Plant care

Potting mix, liquid feed and treatments. The unglamorous half of keeping a plant, and cheaper to buy alongside the plant than to go looking for later.

Gift cards

For when you would rather the recipient chose the plant themselves — which, with plants, is often the right call.

What the Pot Size Tells You

Monstera Deliciosa 23cm and Monstera Thai Constellation 14cm are not two plants of the same size. The figure is the grow pot the plant comes in, and it is the closest thing to a size label that plants have:

10–14cm Desk or shelf plant
17cm Substantial tabletop plant
23–25cm Floor plant, carried with both hands
4.5L, 8L Rated by volume — floor-sized and up
1

Read the number, not just the name.

Plants are listed with a measurement after the species — 10cm, 17cm, 23cm — or sometimes a volume such as 4.5L or 8L. That is the grow pot the plant comes in, and it tells you far more about what turns up than the name does. Two listings of the same species at different numbers are the same plant at different ages.

2

Translate it into a rough size.

As a guide: 10–14cm is a desk or shelf plant, 17cm is a substantial tabletop plant, and 23–25cm or a litre-rated pot is a floor plant you will carry with both hands. Price tracks the number closely, because the plant has been grown for longer.

3

Buy the decorative pot about 2cm larger.

Plants arrive in a plain plastic grow pot. The usual approach is to drop that straight inside a decorative pot roughly 2cm bigger in diameter, which keeps drainage simple and makes repotting later a matter of lifting it out. If you would rather repot properly, go one size up and use potting mix.

4

Check height separately.

Pot diameter describes the root ball, not how tall the plant stands. Where a listing gives an overall height, use that for anything going on a shelf or under a low ceiling. Planters and statuary are listed by height instead, in centimetres.

5

Measure the spot, and be honest about the light.

Light is the constraint that actually decides whether a plant works in a room, not the price. Look at where it will live before you choose — a north-facing window in New Zealand is the bright one — and ask the store which of their plants suit that position.

General guidance for reading plant listings, not a statement about any particular plant on this page. Where a store gives care or sizing detail of their own, theirs is what to follow — and they are the right people to ask which of their plants suits your room.

Giving a Plant

  • A plant is a commitment rather than a bouquet. It is a lovely gift for someone who wants one and an obligation for someone who does not.
  • Check the light where it will live, or ask. The most common reason a gifted plant does not last is that it went to the wrong room, not the wrong person.
  • Remember it arrives in a plastic grow pot. Adding a decorative pot about 2cm larger is what turns it from a purchase into a present.
  • Bigger plants are heavy and awkward to carry to a party. For anything floor-sized, having it delivered to the recipient is easier on everybody.
  • A bag of potting mix or a bottle of feed alongside the plant is a small addition that gets used.
  • If you are not sure what they would like, a gift card lets them choose their own — with plants, that is often the better present.

If you are sending it rather than handing it over, our guide to gift delivery in Auckland covers how that works, and you can add items from other local stores to the same order.

How to Order

1

Check the spot first.

Where the plant is going, how much room it has, and how much light it gets. That narrows the choice more than anything else.

2

Open the store.

Browse Urban Lush NZ's listings on DoorToShop, or start from the Gifting category.

3

Read the pot size.

The number after the species name is the grow pot in centimetres, or the volume in litres. It is what tells you the size of the plant.

4

Add to cart.

Add a decorative pot or potting mix at the same time if you need them. DoorToShop is a multi-merchant marketplace, so items from other local stores go in the same cart.

5

Check out and receive it.

Pay securely by card or net banking, with no minimum order value. The store dispatches the next business day and courier delivery typically takes 1–3 business days.

Delivery is $5 as a base fee, with free delivery on orders above $69, and there is no minimum order value. Enter your postcode at checkout to confirm delivery coverage for your address, or read how DoorToShop works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Urban Lush NZ sell?

Indoor plants — tropicals and aroids such as monstera, alocasia, anthurium, calathea, ficus and dracaena, plus succulents and specialty varieties — along with planters and statuary, decorative stones and shells, potting mix and plant feed, and gift cards. Around 250 listings in total.

What does the number after the plant name mean?

It is the diameter of the grow pot in centimetres, or sometimes the volume in litres. It is the best single indicator of how big the plant is: roughly, 10–14cm is a desk plant, 17cm is a substantial tabletop plant, and 23–25cm or a litre-rated pot is a floor plant. Two listings of the same species at different numbers are the same plant at different ages.

What size decorative pot do I need?

About 2cm larger in diameter than the grow pot. That lets the plant sit inside in its original pot, which keeps drainage straightforward and makes it easy to lift out later. If you would rather repot the plant properly, go one size up and use potting mix.

Does the plant come in the pot shown in the photograph?

Not usually — plants normally arrive in a plain plastic grow pot, and decorative pots are listed separately. Check the individual listing, and ask the store if it is not clear.

How do I know if a plant will suit my room?

Light is the deciding factor, more than anything else. Look at how bright the spot actually is through the day before choosing, and ask the store which of their plants suit that position — they know their own stock better than any general guide does.

Are the plants safe around pets and children?

That varies a great deal by species, and it is worth checking for the specific plant rather than assuming. Ask the store, and for anything you are unsure about, a vet is the right person to ask about pets.

How are large plants delivered?

Confirm with the store before ordering anything floor-sized. Large plants and heavy planters are bulkier and more fragile than most orders, and delivery arrangements are worth agreeing in advance.

Can I buy a gift card instead?

Yes — the store lists one. With plants it is often the better present, because the recipient can pick something that suits their space and their light.

How fast is delivery?

Orders are dispatched by the store the next business day and typically arrive within 1 to 3 business days by courier. Enter your postcode at checkout to confirm delivery coverage for your address.

How much does delivery cost?

The base delivery fee is $5 NZD, with free delivery on orders above $69 — the exact amount is confirmed at checkout. There is no minimum order value.

What if a plant or planter arrives damaged?

Photograph it before unpacking any further and contact the store the same day — plants are perishable and the sooner they hear, the better. Returns are handled by the store that sold the item, and nothing in a store's policy limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
