Why has my candle tunnelled down the middle?
The first burn was too short. Wax has a memory: if the first melt pool does not reach the edge of the container, the candle keeps burning down that same narrow channel and leaves a ring of wax up the sides. Let the first burn run until the pool covers the whole surface.
How short should the wick be?
About five millimetres, before every light. Scissors do the job. A long wick gives a big flickering flame, soot on the glass and a faster burn.
How long can I burn it at a time?
As a general rule for a container candle, no more than about four hours at a stretch, and stop when roughly a centimetre of wax is left — burning to the bottom overheats the base of the container. Any burn instructions printed on the candle itself take priority over anything general said here.
Why is the glass going black?
Soot, usually from an untrimmed wick or a draught. Trim to five millimetres, move the candle away from open windows, fans and heat pumps, and wipe the inside of the glass with a dry cloth once it is cool.
How strong will the scent be?
That depends on the room and on you. A candle that fills a small bedroom can be barely noticeable in an open-plan living area, and people differ a lot in how they perceive fragrance. The scent description on the listing is the maker's own wording.
Is it safe to leave burning?
No. Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from children, pets, curtains and anything else that can catch, burn it on a stable heat-resistant surface, and put it out before you leave the room or go to sleep. The container gets genuinely hot — move it only once the wax has set.
