Frequently Asked Questions
What are kathputli puppets?
The traditional string puppets of Rajasthan -- a carved wooden head with a painted face and a long fabric body. They come from a storytelling performance tradition, and most sold today are bought as decoration.
Are they meant to be played with or displayed?
What is sold as home decor is made for display. A performance puppet is a different thing, built and strung for handling. Treat these as ornaments and they will last; treat them as toys and the strings and the fabric will not.
Where do they hang well?
Somewhere the face is the focal point -- either side of a doorway, in a stairwell, on a narrow wall that a picture would not suit. They read as figures rather than as pattern, which is what makes them work where a textile would not.
How are they hung?
They are light and hang from a nail or a small hook by whatever loop or string the piece provides. What is on this one is on the listing.
Is there anything to check with small children around?
Yes, and worth doing before they go up. These have strings, small decorative parts and fabric trim that can work loose, and loose small parts and long strings are both hazards for young children. Hang them out of reach, check them over now and then, and treat any instruction the seller supplies as taking precedence over this general note.
Will mine look like the photograph?
Not exactly. These are hand-carved and hand-painted, so faces, fabric colours and proportions vary from one to the next -- that variation is the nature of folk craft rather than a defect. If you want a matching pair, buy them together and say so.
How are they cleaned?
A soft dry brush or a gentle shake. The fabric is not made to be washed and the painted wood does not want water, so dust is removed dry. Keep them out of direct sun, which fades bright dyed fabric quickly.
What size is it, and what is it made of?
Both are on the product listing, which is where the seller states them and keeps them current. They are not repeated here, because sizes and materials change between batches and a figure written into an article goes stale without anyone noticing.
How is it packed for delivery?
Worth unpacking carefully and checking it over on arrival. Anything that has gone wrong in transit is the store's to put right, and the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 applies.
Does this page make any claim about what this will do for me?
No. It describes what the object is and how it is generally used, and points at the product listing for material, size and what is included. Objects of this kind appear in festival and household observance, and describing that use is not the same as promising a result. Nothing here is a statement about prosperity, luck, protection or any other outcome, and nothing is a claim about the material or how long a particular piece will last.
Can I order this with items from other stores?
Yes. DoorToShop lets you build one order across more than one local store, so this can go in the same basket as whatever else you are getting that day.
How much is delivery, and is there a minimum order?
Delivery is calculated at checkout, where the exact amount is confirmed. Free delivery applies above the threshold shown there, in the Auckland region only. There is no minimum order value, and you can combine items from other local stores in the same cart.
