Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shankh?

A conch shell, used in Indian household observance both as something blown and as a vessel that is filled and placed.

Why do no two sound alike?

Because the note comes from the internal cavity, which differs shell to shell and is not something you can judge from the outside. Two shells the same size and colour can sound quite different.

Will I get the exact shell in the photograph?

No, and that is in the nature of it. These are natural objects, so size, weight, wall thickness, colour and markings all vary. The photograph shows a representative shell. If size specifically matters, ask the store before ordering.

Is it difficult to blow?

It takes a particular lip position rather than lung power, and most people do not get a note on the first try. That is normal and not a fault in the shell.

How is it cleaned and stored?

Rinse with water and dry it thoroughly, inside as well as out -- water left in the cavity is what makes a shell smell. Keep it somewhere it cannot be knocked onto a hard floor, since shell is brittle and the thin lip is the part that breaks. Avoid strong cleaners and bleach, which attack the surface.

What size is it, and what is it made of?

Both are on the product listing, which is where the seller states them and keeps them current. They are not repeated here, because sizes and materials change between batches and a figure written into an article goes stale without anyone noticing.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but pieces like this are finished by hand and vary a little from one to the next in colour, in the depth of the finish and in small dimensions. If an exact shade or an exact size matters -- because it has to sit in a particular spot or match something you already own -- it is worth asking the store before ordering rather than after.

How is it packed for delivery?

Worth unpacking carefully and checking it over on arrival. Anything that has gone wrong in transit is the store's to put right, and the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 applies.

Does this page make any claim about what this will do for me?

No. It describes what the object is and how it is generally used, and points at the product listing for material, size and what is included. Objects of this kind appear in festival and household observance, and describing that use is not the same as promising a result. Nothing here is a statement about prosperity, luck, protection or any other outcome, and nothing is a claim about the material or how long a particular piece will last.

Can I order this with items from other stores?

Yes. DoorToShop lets you build one order across more than one local store, so this can go in the same basket as whatever else you are getting that day.

How much is delivery, and is there a minimum order?

Delivery is calculated at checkout, where the exact amount is confirmed. Free delivery applies above the threshold shown there, in the Auckland region only. There is no minimum order value, and you can combine items from other local stores in the same cart.
